A Semi-Rant
A few times a week, I'll head over to the Food Network to catch a cooking show or two. I'm not a fan of the gourmet stuff, and I really loathe the cooking competitions (including Iron Chef lately). I love Alton Brown, with his mix of good cooking and food science; Chef Ramsey with his tell-it-like-it-is Brit style (I prefer his earlier Kitchen Nightmares across the pond); Bobby Flay, either grilling or throwin' it down.
And then there's Sandra Lee. How I despise her show! I often watch it for a laugh, or to get my rant on. The entire premise of her shows, and books, are to invite guests over for a dinner party or a luncheon, make an elaborate and environmentally unfriendly, wasteful "tablescape" whilst serving them crap from a box/can/package and fobbing it off as her own cooking. "Semi-homemade" she calls it.

Now I realize the average American uses boxes and packages and cans. My personal feelings aside (another day, another blog), at least they don't have a cooking show! What is the Food Network thinking, putting this woman and her "cooking" alongside the likes of the Barefoot Contessa, de Laurentiis... hell, even Paula Deen with all her white bread and butter. I'll take butter (cream and maybe salt) over Sandra Lee's margarine (oils, "natural" and artificial flavors, mono & diglycerides, soy lecithin, coloring, etc) any day. Sure, you have to use it in moderation, but the problem with margarine is the assumption that it is healthy and therefore no moderation is necessary. That's the problem with our food today: quantity over quality (...there's that other blog butting in).
This video about sums it up...
